This is where I sit back in my rocking chair and start
talking in a shaky but still clear voice . . .

Sonnies, I remember, back in 1987 or so, a similar incident
on the comp.graphics newsgroup, before they started talking
about the "web" or the "information superhighway". Someone
posted the text of a less-than-serious paper which had been
published at a SIGGRAPH conference. The paper was "Ray-tracing
Jell-O(tm) Brand Gelatin", by Paul Heckbert (from the Dessert
Foods Division of Pixar). It wasn't long for a paper, but was
kinda lengthy for a posting.

One person responded with statements like, "Get this drivel
off the net! What a waste of bandwidth! blah blah". This
person was then flamed by someone else, who chided the first
poster for intolerance and lacking a sense of humor. That
second poster was later embarrassed when people began to point
out to him that the first person's email address was something
like "pheckbert". He said, "I guess I missed the best part of
the joke." Someone else replied, "No, you _were_ the best
part of the joke."

Anyway, so much for the old-time stories. The paper was published
in 1987, so I suppose this happened later, maybe in '88.
