it's hard to get a wash to work "right", so the answer is to learn how to
use it "wrong".
frex, I paint all my figures using very light, washed-out looking
basecoats. a relatively thin black wash, and they look darker, the detail
is great, and I can correct any obvious flaws with a little drybrushing...
