Just like the real word... Tanks should NEVER let infantry get close to
them with out their own spporting infantry. Classic examples of this
(by armies that should know better, BTW) are the Germans at Kursk (1943,
eastern front for you non-history types out there) and Isreal in the
Sinia desert in the 73 war.

How the US Army insures that the tread heads will always have some
grunts around is to cross attach platoons to form "Teams". Read the
book "Team Yankee" for an example of this. In E40K I would do this as 2
detachment, on of mech infantry, and one of tanks, mainly for orders
reasons, but mix the two units together as battle field unit. Given
the sort of odd effects of blast markers on Land Raiders, a pure Land
Raider detachment is not really a good idea however, so in the case of
Marines you would go with the British BAOR concept where Squads were
exchanged between platoons. Or you could look at the 1970's early 80's
version of armored Cav in the US Army where each platoon had a tank, a
squad of infatry and a SP mortar. For the record this TO&E was
thought to be a bit odd and was dropped in the mid 80's when the whole
of the AS Army's TO&E were redone.

Pure tank units are not doomed, just you can't use them by them self.
Part of the "Re Fight Waterloo" problem that GW rules (pre E40K, and
it's not quite out of 1815 yet) is that you tend to think of
"Detachments" or "Regiments" or "Squads" as being things that have to
stay close to one another and that mixing what ever the building block
units are together is no some thing you do. Given that E40K breaks
this mold you CAN do commbind arms with out having to do silly things
with your TO&E's. It makes it where "classic" tactics have a chance of
working.
