How do you approach learning a new game?
Personally I'll read the rules roughly, look at the army lists, etc.
and then read the rules ready to play a small game.
With game #1 fresh in my mind I'll re-read the rules and work out
where I went wrong. This prevents a lot of rule arguments - after all
we're just learning.
Game #2 starts with another re-read and gives us another small game -
with yet another reread afterwards.
Games #3+ become 'normal' games in the 'low points' region until we're
confident with the Army Lists. After that, anything goes!
+-----------+
So how did I learn E40k?
Game #1 - I took the 'Example Detachments' from the [rule?]book (the
detachment with the Dreadnought, Landspeeder, etc.) and we played
'Meeting Engagement' with identical sides.
Game #2 - 1000pts [identical] sides introducing One Reaver, 2 Super
Heavies and some Flyers.
Game #3 - 1500pts, different sides. Although both still Imperial -
allowing you to know the capability of your opponents army.
Game #4+ - 1500pts, different Army lists.
The above battles were played out using 'Meeting Engagement' and
ignoring any 'Special Rules' on the Terrain chart. This allows you to
concentrate on the rules, the way the army plays, etc. without
worrying if your squad will get eaten by Ash Clams...
At any point after Game #4 try different missions, terrain types, army
lists, battle sizes you want. Every now and then REREAD THE RULES; it
amazes me how many of the little points you may miss out on.
In all it took about 2 gaming sessions and four reads to get used to
the new rules. Integrating Tyranid and Ork forces was immediate as
they have no 'specific' rules to learn (joy! IMO) - which of course
leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of Space Marine players. But it
does mean faster start-up times.

Hope this was of some help.
