About holding out, maybe that is true. Rome did hold out quite long, as did
many past empires. Only the recent ones did not last as long, and that is
probably due to the rapid changes in technology, sociological and ethical
mores of those time.

p.s. Someone (IIRC) mentioned that it takes quite sometime for dinosaurs
brain to receive nerve/electrical signals from their bodyparts. They could
be dead but still do not realise it yet :P

PS- New WH40K universe is so damn vanilla. It's like a GI Joe comic book.
