For trees:
Twisted wire wrapped with plaster paper (I don't know what the official
name is), then sprayed brown and dry-brushed light brown looks great
for trees. It lends itself to making branches and roots. Glue it to a
base and flock. You can also buy a type of foam that can be torn into
chunks that look just like bunches of leaves which can then be
'impaled' on the branches. The net effect is very nice, IMHO.
