Andy:

Do whatever floats your boat is the bottom line. However, IMHO you
have to at least play the game until you're comfortable with the rules
and not still learning them. It's when you get to that point that you
start learning the tactics of the game. My first impressions had some
common points with yours - the negatives virtually disappeared once I
got a better feel for the game. Again, IMHO.
