Hi all,
As I have always understood it, the expense is in the mouldmaking rather than production of the actual minis. Although the materials are much cheaper with plastics, it costs a lot of money to make an injection mould to make them in. Metal moulds on the other hand are cheap to produce. The high initial cost with plastic has to be spread over a highish production run to make it practical. This is fine with mainstream games, but the amount of Epic figures that Fanatic put out is much smaller.
A good example of the problems of plastic tooling costs was the old Capitol Imperialis / Hellbore. These were metal kits on a plastic chassis. The chassis was bought in from a model kit manufacturer (from a tank kit), unfortunately it became unavailable after a short period and it wasn't economical for GW to replace it themselves, so the models were dropped from the Epic range.
Anyway, that is my understanding of things. I am not an expert on such matters however and others may put me right.
Happy gaming,
Graham

Subject: Re: [NetEpic ML] Plastic or Metal
Hi!
I too would like some insight on this topic, because I have heard some more knowledgable than I in this that GW's claims are bogus. Especially for such a large company as GW who has procured to buy the source materials they need thus cutting the middle men. Methinks it's just an excuse to sell the more metal. As I said before 1 or 2 models per pack gets a pretty good yield when making larger units of 10 or more units.

Subject: [NetEpic ML] Plastic or Metal
Hi gang,
I brought this up to GW/Fanatic's staff some time ago and their explanation was that plastic is as expensive or in some cases more expensive than metal and that is why they don't do more....Anyone with more knowledge of figure design/production want to put me right because as a leyman I would ahve thought plastic has to be cheaper?
Cheers
Warren
