How about giving the veterans another attack die? It would make them more powerful but not overtly so and represent their superior accuracy and fire discipline nicely. I wouldn't raise their CAF even if the assault marines are given a boost. After all, if you're as tough as a group of specialist assault troops and have only basic CC weapons you are pretty darn tough.
