Hi,
Using psychers has nothing to do with religion in my book. Its
when you start calling people "priests" or such and believe that
a deity is behind the technology that we are talking religion.
I can understand that the technology has been lost for millennia,
but even then a fairly evolved race will recognize the difference
between religious writings and actual technical descriptions.
It shoulnd't be hard to sort out the relevant material from such
texts. After all, if they can decipher them enough to duplicate
the rituals, they would be able to sort out the mumbo-jumbo.
This is really a matter of cause and effect. If you believe that
everything in the ritual needs to be there and has an effect, you
are religious. If you recognize the ritual for what it is, you will
be able to see what you can ommit to make the darn things work :)
Of course, to a lesser evolved race, who knows nothing of technology,
everything will seem like magic (and then often mistaken for deity
interaction). So, the question really is, how evolved are they?
Do they have ANY technology of their own, mechanical or electrical
in nature? If they run around with bows and arrows, i can understand
their Machine God. But, even the name itself, Machine God, implies
that they know what a machine is. If you do that, you know its an
automated piece of equipment.
Btw, The Slann also use psychers for entering the warp, why
do they have warppacks? Do they come with a small WarpPsycher(TM)
inside? ;) As far as i know, they use both psychers and technology.
Of course, i dont know the fluff that well, so i wont bet on it.
