The current fluff from the Necron book is that the Old Ones (re- Slann)
were the First Race. Long-lived, they roamed far and wide, genetically
altering races, seeding worlds with life and generally being very
goody-goody. Then came the Necrontyr. They were a short-lived race with
incredible technology. They resented the Old Ones for their longevity and
launched a massive war. The Necrontyr lost and the Old Ones pushed them
back to their home systems. The Necrontyr studied the stars and noticed
ancient spirit-beings living the stars. They created bodies for them and
called them C'Tan. They were like Gods. The C'Tan and the Necrontyr
launched a new war against the Old Ones. They nearly wiped the Old Ones
out. The C'Tan fed on the younger races and turned the Necrontyr into the
Necrons. Eventually the C'Tan began to feed on one another until only a
few remained. The Old Ones saw their chance and stuck back using newly
created races for the war such as the Jokearo, the Eldar and the Krork (who
I take to be Lizardmen). It is even hinted that it was the Old Ones who
created Daemons to fight the C'Tan (the C'Tan have no psychic abilities and
cannot stand psykers or the Warp). In the end the War began to spiral out
of control. The Weapons of the Old Ones rose up and wiped out their
masters, the Warp began to invade the material universe and the C'Tan and
their Necrons went to sleep, hoping to snooze though the end of the War and
wake as the master of whatever was left.
