I think the ones to watch on that score will be Confrontation (fantasy game) and Warmachine (Fantasy Steampunk - It's makers call it Full Metal Fantasy).
Both have very nicely sculpted miniatures, and both are skirmish games, which means you can play with few figures and get into them cheaply. Neither chase the youth market the way GW do though.
No straight sci-fi on the horizon that I know of.
