I have warmed up to Morgans ideas
(many thanks Morgan!) and have come up
with some Netepic versions for the tau units he suggested, so as to have
rules for any future models that may appear for this
army.
These are excellent, Peter. Morgan's idea IS a good one. I
personally prefer the idea of the Tau not having any Titan-style units,
which is why I was pushing the idea that if people really wanted them,
they should be no bigger than Knights or a Warhound at most. Having
adapted spacecraft really is more fiiting for the Tau and makes them very
different in feeling to every other race. Do any of these vehicles
have Energy Shields? The Manta has 4 IIRC so shouldn't the
Moray?
Now, suggestions for models? The Forgeworld Tau BFG models are an
obvious place to start. I'm also sure I have recently seen some
other starship models that are very Tau in their appearance. Let me
check this weekend and get back to you on that.
Finally, I'd like to see a Manta-style vessel that doesn't have the troop
transport capacity. A flying, praetorian-scale gunship designed for
one thing: Annihilation. The sort of firepower you need to level an
Imperator in a few volleys:
Mako Heavy Gunship
Having encountered the formidable firepower of Emperor-class Titans and
Imperial Fortresses, the Tau realised they need a more massive punch than
even the Manta could supply. Fio Caste scientists worked long on
the design, finally creating the Mako Heavy Gunship. Smaller in
size than the Manta, the Mako lacks the Ether-drive and transport
capacity of the Manta for all-out shielding and firepower. Armed
with weapons normally reserved for heavier space vessels such as Rail
Cannons, Ion Phalanxes, Tracer Missiles and Burst Cannons, the Mako is a
terror to behold.

This thing is the sort of vehicle that can drop a Warlord in one round of
firing and give an Imperator pause for thought. I've set points at
900 as a start as its easier to take points up than down. The
damage grid is more compact than the Manta, but not too much. I was
thinking the Forgeworld Custodian BFG figure would be good for this
one.
