Hi,
I just registered on the netepic group. First of all, let me say how
great it is that you lads keep Epic alive. Some friends and I just
returned to playing Epic after a short break of ahem 10 years...We
stopped when Epic 4ok was issued. Last week we played our first game
in years, and naturally some questions arose. Maybe someone could
clarify the following that we could not agree on.
Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work! We are eagerly awaiting
Netepic Gold! :-)

Welcome back to the fold! :-)

Snap fire at charging units - Do I have to do this immediately after
having been charged by a detachment, or can I wait until the end of
the movement phase, when all charges have been declared and executed,
or even do it in the First Fire phase? Background: 2 orc bikes charge
my 10 stand detachment. The 2 charged stands fire at the attackers. In
the same turn, another 10 bikes charge. Depending on how you interpret
the rules, a second charge from a bigger unit would now be safer,
since snap-fire has already been done with the 10 stand detachment.
Apart from that, the 10 stands may not shoot in the 1st phase, because
2 stands shot at charging enemies. How do you handle this?

Unlike SM second edition, you now have two choices regarding units
charging or moving.

Snap fire - this is ONLY used during the movement phase (not the
shooting phase). Its mainly used to interdict movement or AVOID being
pinned in close combat by gunning them down BEFORE they reach you.
Assuming only one unit can engage you of course.

The down side is that this fire has a -1 modifier (unless its a robotic
gun like tarantulas or others that don't take this penalty).

Also once a unit snap fires is DONE. It has fired for the phase and if
it is them charged in the same turn another unit that hasn't fired needs
to help it out.

Using your example the best thing to do is NOT fire on snap fire and
wait for the normal first fire phase so you can shoot at ALL of them.
Also you get to fire without penalty since you didn't snap fire, you
choose to fire in the standard first fire phase.

Therefore its not a good idea to snap fire when it is possible that more
than one unit can charge you, since your opponent can "bait you" with
one unit and then charge you with another.

First fire orders ALLOW you to snap fire in the movement phase, however
you must use your tactical judgment whether or not to use it.

You specific example is a situation NOT to use it.

Peter
