I'm Navy also - Royal Navy, the best in the world (if we had some decent
ships!!) and hold the rank of Petty Officer with 15 years service - hope to
go for Chief's in next few months :)

I agree with your comments about guiding junior officers, I do it all the
time, my immediate superior is a Lt. and he is always asks me what he
should do. Of course i say "well, if I were you, I would do this, this,
this and this".

BTW, I'm a weapons specialist (not SAS but close enough) and as a team we
always have our separate input into a problem but the overall decision is
left to the OIC (with a wee bit of help and nudging from me!)
