Well, I wouldn't really call romaji a true Japanese writing system.
It's really just a convention for English speakers to use initially,
before they learn hiragana and katakana, so that they can at least
read simple Japanese texts. Of course, knowing the kanji is really
important, especially since some words are phonetically similar.

By the way, I liked your rendition of Sauron in katakana. I don't
think I've ever seen ASCII katakana before :)
