The bottom line is, you need to ignore the hype. I know
you're capable of it, because you're not GW flunkies yet.

Detailed examples follow that will want to make you skip the rest of
the post if you don't care.

The Players Handbook, and the DMG. Maybe the basic monster
book if you need it. If you don't want your own universe, then you
can steal chunks as needed from other people with sourcebooks.

I'm playing two games of SR. One uses every sourcebook ever
made (because the GM has them) and most of the net supplements. It's
interesting, and works because half of us are veteran players. It's
also fun, since the majority of the party didn't make
power-characters. Anyways, on to the real example:

The other uses the main book (SR2), Shadowrun Compendium for
alternate character creation, Street Samurai Catalog for extra tech
toys, and the Grimoire for extra magic toys. If the mage in the party
hadn't been playing with them constantly for the past 4 years, we
probably wouldn't need the Griomoire. As it is, we're only using
about 2 pages of it. I suppose we're also borrowing the suppressive
fire rules and I took two pieces of equipment (camo jacket and smoke
grenades) from Fields of Fire... But it's really only 3 books, plus a
few pages out of two more. The two other books are hardly important
bits, any decent GM can make up quick rules for the stuff we're using
out of them.

To play among friends, you need enough cards to build a couple
decks, and a booster pack every so often to keep things interesting.
The old cards are still perfectly valid except in 2 of the 3
tournament types. It works for me and my other CCGs, but I sold out
of Magic when it looked like card speculating was levelling off. (I
bought mine when they came out, and then noticed I could sell for a
profit a game that I had gotten a lot of enjoyment out of but was
starting to get sick of)
