------> Yep. How do you know you aren't already fighting at night, and
the available
tech makes it irrelevant? I was always under the "reinforcements ain't
that far away"
 impression too.
SM/TL had no real time limit, ours typically went 3-4 turns and were
roughly 5000 pts. For WH40K you can roll for the battle length (3,4,5
turns) or you
can always fight til one side is completely destroyed, if you want to.
It's just that
within a few turns it's pretty obvious that one side has won, and it
turns into a
"chase down that last unit and waste 'em" game which is pretty tedious.
Better
to concede, regroup, and fight again than draw out a game which is
already decided.
Same with WHFB.
If you want "reality" then in modern fights units are rarely wiped out
100%.
A unit's morale fails or it's CCC is disrupted to the point it can no
longer function, or
it takes enough casualties the higher ups order them back (or morale
fails despite what the
commanders want) and they run off.

"we can't pursue that retreating enemy? Why?"

"because half of our battle brothers are lying out there on the ground
and we need to link-up with
the survivors, treat the wounded, and recover gene-seed from the falllen
so we can be ready for
the NEXT battle. Besides, we've already beaten them. Let 'em go, we have
more important
duties to perform..."

It's not that ridiculous if you buy into some of the background.
