[Epic] Battle Report (long)

This past Saturday Andy Skinner and I played a 1500 point game, Orks vs.
Titan Legions. Andy took a force of Knights and Titans, and I had a
veritable horde of Orks (though all of the minis were Andy's!). We got
started after sorting out the detachments that I had made up for the game.

My Army:

Detachment 1: Warlord

Warlord upgraded to Boarboy
Weirdboy Warphead upgraded to Battlewagon
16 Boarboyz

Points: 288

(On writing this list, I remembered that I couldn't have taken all of that
legally, as the Warphead counts as one of the bodyguards. But it didn't
matter anyway, he didn't end up doing much. Sorry Andy, I messed up.)

Detachment 2: Kult of Speed

Warboss in battlewagon
9 Battlewagons
9 Buggies
2 Mekboy Speedstas with Deathray

Points: 346

Detachment 3: Ork Warband (The slow bunch)

Warboss upgraded to a Stompa
Weirdboy upgraded to Battlewagon
8 Grotz
8 Boyz
5 Nobz
5 regular Stompas

Points: 400

Detachment 4: Ork Warband

Warboss in Battlewagon
9 Boyz
15 Battlewagons
3 Pulsa Rokkits
3 Big Gunz

Points: 429

I'll describe things from my side of the board. We played a Meeting
Engagement, and we both placed 3 Objectives. My two fast detachments
set up on the left, while the Stompas st up on the right with the
Warlord. Andy's Warlord set came in right about the middle of the board,
his pair of Warhounds opposite my fast detachments, with a detachment
of Knights on either side of the Warlord (One of which was between
the Warlord and the Warhounds).

Staring Morale: Orks: 30, Imperials: 32

Turn 1:
Everybody advanced. All of my detachments assaulted, while Andy took a
more conservative approach. Andy Orbital Barraged my Stompa detachment,
but only managed to kill a couple of Grotz.

Turn 2:
My fast detachments roared out to engage the titans. Th Kult of Speed
engaged the Warhounds, and the Warband with Rokkits and Gunz engaged the
Warlord, going far enough to get everybody in range of the Warlord Titan, even
the boyz. Unfortunately, I didn't win Shooting initiative, and this
detachment suffered heavy losses (both of Andy's Knight detachments were
on Overwatch). However, despite this, the Big Gunz detachment managed to
strip the Warlord of 3 void shields and place a whopping 5 blast markers
on it. Andy shot the Kult of Speed with his other Knight detachment, but
only managed to kill off a couple of buggies. The Kult of Speed then
opened up on the pair of Warhounds, stripping one entirely of shields,
and the other of one. The Mekboyz both fired their Deathrays at the
shieldless Warhound, but, with incredibly Orky luck, only managed to
hit the darn thing once! However, the one that hit damaged the head
of the titan, immobilizing it and taking out one of its gun batteries.
During the War Engine shooting phase, the Warhound retaliated against
the Kult of Speed, but again only succeded in taking a few more buggies
out of the fight. The Warlord Titan was completely ineffectual this turn,
as its Heavy weapons battery was out of range of any possible targets,
and without the Firepower needed to soak up suppression, the most
it could do was lay down a couple of blast markers. During the assault
phase, the mobile Warhound moved into a position and broke my Kult of
Speed, while my Stompas and infantry moved up the right flank. Blast
marker removal was horrendous, and the Kult of Speed remained broken.
My other detachment only removed one or two out of the five they had
accumulated. Andy's forces fared much better, and only lost three
morale at the end of the turn from suppression.
End of Turn 2 Morale: Orks: 22, Imperials: 29

Turn 3:
I lost the initiative in the movement phase, so I went first. The Kult
of Speed was still broken, and I forgot to move it another 20cm as a
retreat move. The Warband with the Big Gunz attempted to go into
Overwatch, but failed its Leadership test. The Stompas and the Boarboyz
both assaulted to attempt to engage the Knight detachment to the right
(my right) of the Warlord Titan. The Knight detachments again went into
Overwatch, and the Warlord Titan, now free of any hindering suppression, turned
towards my Warlord and his Boarboyz. The shooting phase went pretty much
as expected, with both my fast detachments and my Warlord detachment being
driven to half strength. My Warlord died in a fiery tempest of combinded
Titan and Knight Firepower. My Boyz succeded in destroying a couple of
Knights and a Sentinel, but were otherwise ineffectual. The Boarboyz, now
blown to bits, attempted a feeble assault on the Knight detachment, but
failed to make their Leadership test. During the rally phase (though this
was more out of interest than anything else, as I had already undeniably
lost), Andy managed to remove ALL of his blast markers. I think I removed
about three from the three detachments that had gotten hit at all.

End of Turn 3 Morale: Orks: less than 0, Imperials: 29

OUCH! Well, I don't think it has to be said, but I got crunched. The
biggest problem was that I wasn't thinking when I set up, and the two
slowest detachments were left with nothing to do. The Stompa detachment
should have been give a more central position, and marched the first turn
to enable it to do more than it ended up doing (I think it killed a Knight
or two...). All in all, though, it was a fun game. Plus, neither of
us had played much before, so it was really a learning experience for
both of us (though I think more so for me). I definitely need to brush
up on my strategy... :(

Hope you enjoyed the report.
