What, you never hear of a deathray. An antitank shot. A lifta-droppa. A
pulsar. Even with 4 wounds, these still rack up kills on our overlords
(though we did pass on the nonsense of blimps doing pop-ups, so your
life is a bit tougher there). And the overlords we face have a proper
range (45cm).
I would say that the overlords listed in CJ look a little underpriced,
based on the cost of landspeeders and stompas.
As to beating them: LR detats, speedsta detats, fireprisms, scorpions.
These are all faster than CJ overlords, and have longer range. Use them
in smallish units to outrun the overlords to a flank. Smaller units will
allow you to reduce the overall pain of blastmarkers, though early on
you may lose morale faster. They will also allow you to keep some units
ready to fire until the pop ups bring out the targets. As it sounds like
he isn't using any assault capable troops, small unit CC liabilities
won't be too bad either. Also, if he wants to pull no infantry, you can
play that game too. A large number of LR's (in smaller detats) will take
the wind out of any firepower based army.
Use blast markers or flyers to reduce the effectiveness of goliaths; use
anything to kill gyrocopters, hell they're 31 points with a 5+ armor.
You've got to come out ahead against that crap.
If you want a copy of our squat rules, let me know.
