I think you should read some of the things written about the Russian use
of artillery in WWII. They thought that direct fire artillery was 5 to
10 times more effective than indirect fire. Of course you tend to lose
a lot more of your artillery when you use it like that.
Basic problem here is that GW has written a set of rules that assumes
that all units in play must be on the table. This is a recent change to
the GW universe. In WH40K/RT days and Epic 1st Ed you could buy off
table support. You want to include artillery, because it was an
important part of WWII, but you don't want to give it WWII type ranges,
you want to give it Waterloo/American Civil War type ranges. All the
various work arounds that have been presented are to allow artillery
something close to real world ranges but make it where a person would
have SOME reason to bring it on to the table ala "normal" Epic 40K/
Warhammer 40K.
P.S. Alan I am going to steal your wording there for E41K's artillery
rules. Much cleaner than what I had been using.
