Derek,

If you've got the infantry, it doesn't hurt to get some vehicles.
Honestly the best investment you could make Space Marine-wise is to buy
the boxed game. Tons of Space Marines in there, then you just have to
trade the Orks for more and flesh out the Imperial Guard.

Other than that, absolutely pick up some Leman Russes and Hellhounds for
support - 6 and 3, respectively, works quite well as a detachment and
comes in around 250 points.

IG squad is 7 per unit (5 men) so 14 per squad - that the normal IG.
Heavy IG is 14 points for a single 5 man unit. So normal IG is 1/2 the
cost of Heavy IG.

We usually play 2,000 to 4,000 depending on mood/time/scenario. 2,500
to 3,000 seems ideal for a medium length evening game.

Not sure how many points, and yes Terminators are 19 points for a unit
of 5 Terminators.

There are some chapter specific rules and an Imperial-specific fate card
deck 'The Emperor's Tarot' in previous issues of White Dwarf. Someone
else'll have to help ya on the specifics as I play my own chapter with
no special rules and thus don't recall the other ones.

I'm afraid that's me - at least I'm planning to. So far I have a lot
more to go but it does look great on those that have it. It's
definitely easier to paint just the trim than to get in there and paint
the squad type (arrow, V, X) and the chapter symbol (in my case a skull
for the Shadow Skulls). It's worth a try though - and I wish I had one
of those pens - right now I do it with a very small paint brush.

I wouldn't go as far as that, but I might just paint the sword or an
eagle wing alone.

I've been thinking along the same lines - there have been some great
tips in the past on terminator conversions. Anyone out there remember
them?
