Re: [Epic] spirit warrior
---------> It's kind of a weird breakdown:
1st ed 40K had war walkers, & dreads piloted by regular eldar (what would be
guardians now, but this was pre-aspect warriors) and spirit warriors & ghost
warriors piloted by stones. Spirit warriors were as big as a dread , though
they looked different (they had a face, kinda like a guardian helmet!) while
ghost warriors were man-sized and had a carapace like the dread, and had the
blurring ability mentioned in an earlier post.
SM/TL went with the "dreads use stones, walkers use pilots" fluff and
added wraithguard (new) which also used stones. Sm/TL also included the rule
that the stone units mimicked whatever the nearest living eldar unit did, or
could be commanded by a warlock.
2nd ed 40K went with this fluff and also brought the wraithguard in to
the smaller scale rules for the first time.
I would recommend anyone who's interested in the universe & fluff at least
pick up a copy of the WH40K compendium (the red one) as it has a lot of the
flavor that made 40K so darn popular. The compilation (yellow book) is
helpful also, but comes from a couple of years after the red book. If you
look around in used game sections or in the marketplace newsgroups (say,
Deja News) then you can find them fairly cheap, and they add a lot to one's
understanding of the background.
(Ahh...the good old days. Remember when terminators were just a 2+ on _1_d6?
Of course, marines were only a 4+...
Remember when marines had a 3 toughness?
Remember when White Dwarf and Dragon were useful Can't-miss-even-one-issue
magazines?
Remember when that "grav-Attack-vehicle-made-from-a-deoderant-stick" was
cool? now most people would look at you cross-eyed...
Remember when 40K was kind of a "spooky" universe, sort of Star Wars meets
Call of Cthulu?
sigh...)
