Never heard this "chipped armor" story before. Probably becasue I don't own
any of the new stuff.

Obviosuly. The Rebel fleet had to fight into the most heavily defended
starsysyem inthe Imperium. But most of the Loyalist fleet was scattered
over the Imperium fighting the Rebels. So in only a few weeks they reached
Earth.

In the old days the Space Marine Legions (they were Legions then, not
Chapters) had their own fleets of ships. Probably some of the Fleet did
rebel like everyone else. But even if they did not the Legions had their
own warships (they still do to a much lesser extent). Even the IG had their
own transports. That was abolished after the Heresy. In my little blurb I
took from the LatD book it says the Rebel warships were conducting orbital
bombardment.

See Adeptus Titanicus/Space Marine. The Eldar fought Horus because he was a
Chaos pawn. The others probably just took advantage of the situation...
