OK, the Italian Govt may be a bunch of whackers. And the Lira not worth
very much.
But Italy as a nation....
Pasta, Alfa-Romeos, Pizza, Cellini, Da Vinci, the list goes on and on.
This small chunk of Europe has had a large influence on world culture,
and continues to do so. IMHO even more so than France (though the French
have a technological influence not often recognised).
