There is NO place in the rules that says you must shoot at the closes
detachment to you. It does say the following:

"Line of fire is blocked by terrain features ... but not by other
units." (page 18).

It does give an example of shooting at two detachment, one of which is
(obviously) farther away than the other.

You do have allocate hits based on closes to you (in the target
detachment) but you do NOT have shoot only at the closes detachment.

Get over it guys, your cheese ball commanders are legal targets now,
both as stand alone detchments (i.e. Supreme Commander) to general fire
power units and even within a detachment by heavy weapons. The old
moronic Games Workshop rule about legal targets IS NOT IN EPIC 40,000.

This is a good thing, at least to me.

If you get line of sight/line of fire on a detachment you can shoot at
it, regardless of if it is the closes target. If a heavy weapon unit
gets line of fire at ANY unit, it can fire at it. There are NO
execptions to this in the rules.
