Er, only one kill is caused by a firefight. p27.

Rationalisation - the bike was the forward spotter for the rest of the
detachment - without him in play to call down the fire, the detachment
retreats to regrup. Or the bike was some super John Wayne type hero,
and when his buddies saw him die in a hail of lead, their will to fight
went bye-bye.

Tactic - don't risk haing a 600pt detach run away because you got sloppy
with one bike. Don't have 600pt detachments, or this sort of thing is
bound to happen. Try not to let units from one detachment become
separated by more than 10cms - or less, as barrage templates are 6cm or
so.
