I thought that Sanguinous killed a demon (specifically, a
bloodthirster) at the gate, breaking its back over his knee, rather
than having been killed by one.
A good example of rewritten history is the Imperial Fists'
part in attacking Horus' battle barge. These days GW generally only
bothers to mention Sangy & his Blood Angels, even though Rogal Dorn
was the one who is supposed to have built the golden throne.
There's lots of good history in the old GW board game, Horus
Heresy, if you can still find a copy. Includes an overview of the
rebellion as a whole and the attack on Earth in particular, and shows
the size & location of the Earth defense forces (on the game board
anyway, I guess that shouldn't be taken as 'official' but it's still
interesting).
