'k' as in technology. Think 'Battle-tek.'

Rogue Trader was the previous edition of the Warhammer 40k.
It was a single book (not part of a box set) that laid down the
basic 40k rules. Race-specific rules were released in a number of
supplements (the Realms of Chaos books, Freebooterz, etc). The RT
books had a heavy emphasis on the atmosphere of the 40k universe
which has been largely done away with in the current version.

A long time ago they published some rules in WD for
'Confrontation,' which was sort of a 40k RPG. Those rules never
got finished, but they were the basis for the Necromunda game.
Necromunda is probably as close as you can get.
