They were hardly strong, but they were somewhat comparable to
the other race's tactical infantry. All the tactical infantry in that
game seemed to get one shot at 50cm, 5+, no save mod.

I had a different approach. I would usually take half of my
aspects as Dire Avengers, and the other half would be the CC troops
that you favor. Dire Avengers were better than Marines per stand, yet
cost the same as a Guardian. I loved fielding them, and was supported
by fluff that claimed they were the most common. (I, of course,
ignored the fluff that claims that Guardians make up the bulk of the
army)

Yeah, I always tried to minimize casualties by fielding lots
of bikes (two dead Guardians (now 3) as opposed to 5) and vehicles.
But fielding Dreads and Wraithguard don't particularly work for the
Eldar. There's a dead hero inside each one, and by installing it in a
war machine, it's no longer contributing to the infinity circuit in
the craftworld. Although the Eldar themselves seem to have forgotten
the last hope of the race (I haven't seen it in fluff for a while),
they're hoping to create something to rival Slaneesh by collecting
enough Eldar souls in an infinity circuit. I think.
