The only chapters that really use them on a regular basis are the Dark
angels + successor chapters, White scars and successors. And then the only
company to have more than 1 is the White Scars
And an IG army form which 10 light year area of Space. Please don't make any
generalisations about IG they will invariably end up wrong. There are 1000
chapters of Space marines all of which that follow the Index Astartes to a
certain degree, but every planet in the Imperium has its own PDF which is
tailored to the needs of the planet and 10% of this force is tithed in times
of crisis to the IG.
With this in mind depending on were a conflict is taking place an IG army is
going to more manoverable than a SM army.
To use a few examples.
Attlia is invaded. They aren't getting off their horses because the entire
army is more manoverable than the SM army sent to help them
Tallarn is invaded. Again they won't get out of their vehicles and dig
trenches in their irradiated death trap of a desert world just because some
7" tall holier than thou giant has told them to.
Where everyone seems to believe that IG are a static war of attrition army
which in a lot of cases is not true.
Even saying that with Marines most of the army is mobile as every infantry
stand you have unless it was drop podded in has a rhino to carry it around.
In most IG Companies there is just transport for the command squad and the
commissar. Which usually make up the bulk of an IG army but there are
exceptions. Look at the Gaunts Ghost Books and the variety of units that
they fight with/against in their same with the various units in 13th legion
and Kill team. In all of those books there is a great variety in the
regiments and their style of combat from the light Tanit, to the heavy
Bluebloods with the tactically flexible Vitrerians some where between.

Hi!
Really? I gathered that people thought SM SHOULD have bike companies, or
at least some chapters do. Its silly to think IG have more
maneuverability than SM. They should have bike companies.

A while back there was some discussion about allowing Space marine
chapters
to field full bike companies in the same manner as the Imperial Guard.
As they claimed that this can make the IG more manoverable that a SM
army.
It then followed on that White Scars and DA would lose their advantage
as
they are the only SM chapters to have the Company sized formations of
Bikes
and Landspeeders. Resulting in motions put forward for them to have 2
such
companies.
This I am against at least in the case of The Dark angels. The one
reason
why the Ravenwing is so good with their bikes is that since they are
fully
accepted in to the chapter a member of the Ravenwing is a dedicated
bike/Landspeeder warrior and the Chapter lumped all of the light
vehicles in
to the single formation. They don't physically have any more vehicles or
the
spare capacity to produce any more.
Where as with the IG due to the rules about how and where regiments are
called up , usually within 10 light years of a trouble spot there is
going
to be far more variability to the force that is going to be produced.
For
example If Attila is attacked their is going to be a very different army
deployed against the threat than if Mordia or Cadia were attacked.
Where as the various Marine chapters are completely fixed with the
differences being minor as most of the chapters follow the Index
Astartes to
a greater or lesser degree, Major exceptions Space Wolves, Black
Templars,
White Scars.
But within the individual chapters there is very little difference
between
the various companies as they all follow a set pattern, Battle, assault,
tactical, Devastator, vehicle, Scout.
This is just my opinion feel free to comment, agree disagree.
