As Peter & Darius have said, it's largely a matter of personal preference - I base my infantry on 22mm ceramic tiles. The problem comes when you and your opponent have different styles and can't intuitively agree on "base to base contact." A few minutes spent before the game looking at how your respective bases might fit together is well spent.

You've generally got two options: 20 mm square and 12x40 mm (the two GW base sizes). You can get lots of the square ones by cutting Warmaster regiment bases in half.

As far as preference goes, the square ones are nice for representing a squad and have a good feel. The longer ones are perhaps more versatile: they can be strung out to represent a long skirmish line or closae ranks to give maximum firepower in minimum area. They're also easier to paint if you foolishly mount before painting, instead of painting while on the sprue.
