I think they are essential part of the game, because they give you
a second chance if you if get a really bad die roll. Overall fate
cards average out the die roll results which means the results of
close combats become more a product of skill than luck.

Fate cards are far weaker than the psyhic phase in SM/TL and you
can use your cards to cancell out your oppositions attacks.
