I think you are barking up the wrong tree here. It seems more likely
(IMO) that the change in basing is more a consequence of the new
bases. The bases are twice as wide as the old ones, and the lads
at the studio decided that three bikes on a new base just looked
cooler than two bikes on a new base. Remember the reasoning we
were given about why a lot of the old demon and tyrnid miniatures
were so out of scale to the rest of the infantry figures? "They
look cooler that way."
