I think once everyone has played enough to have several effective
detachments that are premade it will be just as quick. The few 40K players
I know keep squad cards just like the detachment cards. Pick your points
value, lay out cards close to the value, and add an extra tank for support,
or shave a few bikes to get closer to the value (post-it notes would work
fine for noting changes).
