Most of the improvements have been in the infantry weapons. However,
there shouldn't be Whirlwinds back then according to current GW fluff.
Also new since then are assault cannons, man-portable plasma weapons (of a
reliable nature), stormbolters and thunderhammers. This is all from the
WH40K Codex Chaos, which describes the Marine equipment at the time if the
heresy.
