...And then there was the guy in the R&D lab where I co-op'ed, who
periodically made stew on a hot plate for the section I was in. He made
maybe a 1/2 gallon, and used an entire habanero in there, plus some
other hot spices & things. (Beef stew, usually.)

This was something that cleared the sinuses from 10 paces. (Well, not
quite, but....) Actually eating it was something else entirely... very,
very good, though, if you could take the heat.
