[Epic] HQ Units

I don't know if anyone convinced anyone else of the cost
of a HQ unit, but I've done some digging and found some
things:

1. All detachments must have an HQ unit. This much is
easily agreed upon. (Exception: War Engines)

2. Some detachments have specific models which must be
thier HQ unit. For example, an Ork Warband must be
lead by a Warboss. Ork Warbands do not have any
choice but to buy a Warboss. There are no other
    options.

3. Some detachments may be lead by any unit in the
detachment. For instance, an Ork Battlefortress
Mob must elect one of its Battlefortresses to lead
    the others.

3a. Some of these types of detachments may elect an
    HQ without paying a premium.

3b. Some of these types of detachments may elect an
HQ but must pay a premium for the HQ unit.

3c. When choosing an HQ unit you must follow the
    prescribed chain-of-command for that detachment.
For instance, the CoC for a Space Marine
Detachment is Captain -> Librarian -> Terminator...
A Space Marine detachment consisting of 2 Terminator
squads and 1 scout squad (no captain, no Librarian)
would have to be lead by one of the Term sqads
(and would have to pay a 25 pt premium).

4. In some detachments, leader-type models are not
automatically HQ units. They can be designated as
such, following the CoC. Some leader-type models
will have to pay a premium for becoming the
    detachment's HQ unit.

A good example of the above statements can be found
in the Detachment Cards for the first Refight scenario
in the Battles Book.

Detachments that must be lead by a specified model:

Imperium: IG Infantry (Command Squad)
           Imperial Supreme Commander (varies)

Orks: Ork Warband (Warboss)
           Kult of Speed (Warboss)
           Ork Warlord (Warlord)

Eldar: Harlequins (Great Har. or Shadow Seer)
           Eldar Commander (Avatar or Farseer)

Chaos: Chaos Cult (Coven)
Supreme Commander (Warmaster or D. Prince)

Tyrandids: Tyranid Swarm (Tyrant or T. Warrior)
Mycetic Swarm (Tyrant or T. Warrior)
           Flight Swarm (Harridan)

Detachments that may be lead by any model and who
must pay a premium for their HQ unit:

Imperium: Space Marine Detachment
           Space Marine Armor
           IG Tanks Detach.
           IG Artillery Detach.
           Imperial Air Detach.

Orks: Flyboyz Mob

Eldar: War Host
           Eldar Fleet

Chaos: Chaos Space Marines
           Daemon Detachment
           Flyer Detachment
           Chaos Engine Detachment
           Chaos SM Armor Detachment

Tyranids: None

Detachments that may be lead by any model and who
do not pay a premium:

Imperium: IG Super Heavy Tank Company

Orks: Battlefortress Mob

Eldar: Engines of Vaul

Chaos: None

Tyranids: None

I hope this helps. I know it helped me.

By all I can tell, the sample Eldar detachment in the
Armies Book is not legal - it has no designated HQ unit.
Also, the sample Chaos detachment incorrectly lists
its HQ unit as costing 52 points - it should be 57.
The Ork sample is wrong too - 4 Stormboyz should cost
48, not 40. Sigh.
