I find it...odd... that people say Epic40K is so much better then the older
editions. Personally I think if you play with someone halfway competent in
the rules and who know the unit abilities, games go very fast. I have played
LARGE games of 8000+ points (old scale) with 2 Imperators, multiple Titan
battlegroups, and hordes of infantry against Orks and Eldar in one night.
the games I played of Epic40K took a LONG time to play because A) We both
had to keep referring to the books for questions on badly worded rules B) We
kept moving around constantly and C) Many things were counterintuitive
(Firefight rules for one are horribly broken, if a good idea).
Epic40K is a FUN game I will admit. I personally was VERY skeptical of it
when I saw it but I did enjoy playing it. My gripes with the system have
nothing to do with how the game plays but the way the rules are written. Its
lost what little wargaming feel the old edition had and replaced it with
sterilized generic stats. I'd play Generic Legions if I wanted that (and
that is free and can use any model). The older editions may have been more
complex but they were much truer "wargames" then the comic book style fights
of Epic40K. Debate if you wish, but there is no way you can recreate any
modern battle in Epic40K without some very ingenious stretching of the rules
and scenarios. At least the old editions could kinda compare with the likes
of Command Decision. I'm not talking complex (even Netepic at its worst will
NEVER be as complex as Command Decision) but rather the feel you get that
you are REALLY commanding a group of tanks or infantry. Not units of
Firepower.
There is a movement in the NetEpic group to make a "Cadet" version of the
rules that simplifies everything so even a monkey could understand it. As
well as maybe integrate some of the more interesting ideas of Epic40K (ie
artillery disrupts, not necessarily kills) into the rules. I'm also leading
a movement to add optional rules to make the game more.. <ahem> "realistic"
with advanced artillery rules and other such stuff. With luck I plan on
integrating the old Renegade Legion stuff into the game. Then you can have
orbit to dirt games with fighters in the middle.
I'm sure someone will take offense, but chill. Its only little pieces of
metal and plastic. Expensive pieces of metal and plastic at that... for fun
I recommend everyone at least LOOK at the Generic Legion rules and compare
them with NetEpic and Epic40K:
